+EV Betting Explained: How to Find Value Bets That Beat the Bookmaker
Winning at sports betting isn't about picking winners — it's about getting the right price. That's what +EV (positive expected value) betting is all about. If you only ever bet when the odds are in your favour, the math takes care of the rest.
What is a value bet?
A value bet is a bet where the odds offered imply a probability lower than the true probability of the outcome. In other words, you're getting paid more than the risk deserves.
Say the true chance of an outcome is 50% (fair odds = 2.00), but a bookmaker offers you 2.20. Over many bets at that edge, you win money — even though you'll lose plenty of individual bets.
The expected value formula
EV = (win probability × profit) − (loss probability × stake)
A simpler way for bettors: Edge % = (your odds ÷ fair odds) − 1. If your odds beat the fair odds, you have positive expected value.
Where does "fair odds" come from?
This is the hard part. You need a trustworthy estimate of the true probability. The best practical source is the sharp market:
- Pinnacle and sharp exchanges set extremely efficient prices because they welcome winners and move on real money.
- Remove the bookmaker margin (the "vig") from those prices and you get the market's best estimate of fair odds.
- Any soft bookmaker offering a higher price than that fair line is a value bet.
How to find +EV bets consistently
- Compare soft books to a sharp benchmark. A recreational book and Pinnacle will often disagree — that gap is your edge.
- Move fast. Value windows close quickly as books adjust. The earlier you are, the bigger the edge (and the better your CLV).
- Bet the edge, not the team. Discipline beats gut feel. If there's no value, there's no bet.
- Stake sensibly. Use flat staking or a fractional Kelly approach so variance doesn't blow up your bankroll.
Does +EV betting actually work?
Yes — it's the same principle that makes the house win in a casino, just flipped in your favour. The catch is execution: finding enough value bets, getting on before the line moves, and tracking that your edge is real (via CLV). Doing that by hand across dozens of books is the bottleneck — which is why most serious bettors use a tool to surface the value automatically.
